Richie Hebner returns to the Frederick Keys in 2009 for his first full season with the team. Hebner took over as Skipper on May 26, 2008 and guided the Keys to a 35-55 record.
Richie Hebner's career in professional baseball began as a player way back in 1966. The Pittsburgh Pirates drafted him out of Norwood High School (MA) with the 15th overall pick. After three seasons of minor league ball, Hebner made his Pittsburgh debut in 1968.
The former third baseman played in the big leagues for 18 seasons, mostly with the Pirates. In fact, Hebner started at the hot corner for the Bucs when they went on their championship run in 1971. After nine seasons with the Pirates, Hebner signed with the Philadelphia Phillies. Later in his career, he would play for the New York Mets, Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs. He called it quits after the 1985 season. When it was all said and done, Hebner had amassed 203 big league homeruns.
Before coming to Frederick, Hebner was the hitting coach for the Nashua Pride of the independent Can-Am League. That’s not his only coaching experience, however. He’s also managed in the Toronto Blue Jays system, with single-A Myrtle Beach in 1988, and triple-A Syracuse in 1995 and 1996. His most recent job in affiliated ball was as the hitting coach for the Birmingham Barons of the Southern League, in the White Sox organization. |
