WARTHOGS SQUEAK BY KEYS
Winston-Salem Score Twice in the Ninth to Beat Frederick
The Winston-Salem Warthogs won a pitcher's dual at Harry Grove Stadium tonight, as they defeated the Frederick Keys 5-3. Both Keys starter Tim Bascom and Warthogs starting pitcher Clevelan Santeliz pitched seven strong innings, but neither factored into the decision. Both pitchers struggled in the second. In the top half, Ronnie Gaines worked a walk. He then stole second, and came around to score on Estee Harris' double, giving the Warthogs a 1-0 lead. The Keys got it right back in the bottom half of the second. With one down and one on, Chris Amador blasted a two-run homer to leftfield, putting Frederick out in front, 2-1. The lead didn't last long. In the top of the third, Dale Mollenhauer and CJ Retherford led off the inning with back-to-back doubles, tying the game at two. Retherford would later score on a ground out to short to give the Warthogs a one-run lead. Frederick would rally back, though. Brandon Snyder hit a solo homerun to centerfield in the sixth to tie the ball game up at three. Both starters exited after the seventh. Bascom allowed three earned runs on seven hits, while walking one and striking out five. On the other side, Santeliz allowed three runs, all earned, on five hits. He walked one and struck out six. Winston-Salem re-took the lead for good in the top of the ninth. Gaines led off the inning with a walk. He was then sacraficed to second. Sergio Miranda lifted a high fly ball to deep rightfield. Brandon Tripp lost the ball in the lights. It dropped behind him, and bounced over the wall. The ground rule double scored Gaines, and gave the Warthogs a 4-3 lead. Miranda would then come around to score on an Adam Ricks RBI-single. Matt Zaleski got the win for Winston-Salem. His record is now 7-2. Kenny Moreland took the loss. It was his first Carolina League appearance. He's now 0-1. The Keys and the Warthogs will meet once again tomorrow evening at Harry Grove Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00.
