BULLPEN POWERS KEYS TO EXTRA INNINGS VICTORY
Frederick Breaks Up Perfect Game Bid, Comes Back to Win
It was a tale of two halves, as the Frederick Keys defeated the Salem Avalanche 3-2 in 12 innings at Harry Grove Stadium. Salem starter Polin Trinidad retired 18 straight Frederick hitters to start the game. With the Avalanche leading 2-0, Keys CF Danny Figueroa broke up the perfect game with a walk to lead off the top half of the seventh. LF Bobby Andrews followed that up by breaking up the no-hitter with a double down the right field line. Trinidad walked the next batter, SS Chris Amador, and was taken out. Two batters later, new pitcher Jason Dominguez walked in a run, throwing four straight balls to DH Chris Vinyard. O's top prospect Matt Wieters came into the game as a pinch-hitter and hit a groundball up the middle for a single. Andrews scored from third, but Amador was thrown out at the plate. The score stayed tied at two until the 12th inning. 1B Brandon Snyder led off the inning with a single off new Salem pitcher Bryan Hallberg. Two batters later, Hallebrg hit RF Brandon Tripp with a pitch. With the winning run at second, 3B Todd Davison flicked a ball down the right field line that dropped, scoring Snyder, and giving the Keys their eighth victory of the season. While the Keys hitters could only muster four hits, the pitching staff shined. Starter Brad Bergesen went 5.1 innings, and allowed two runs (just one earned) on five hits, walking two and striking out seven. LHP Chad Thall, and righties Ryan Ouellette and Jason Burch then combined for 6.2 innings of scoreless relief. Burch picked up his first win of the season after pitching two perfect innings. Hallberg got credited with the loss. Trinidad, who was perfect through the first six frames, did not factor into the decision. The Frederick Keys wrap up their season with the Salem Avalanche tomorrow evening at Harry Grove Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
